What should I check when building a rental or B2B marketplace?
Marketplace-specific risks to design and test:
- Identity boundaries between supplier, renter and admin; ownership and visibility of listings, RFQs, chats, contracts and verification files
- Availability and reservation concurrency — two renters must not reserve the same constrained inventory
- Payments, deposits, refunds and payouts (if you handle them): authenticated, idempotent, audited and reconciled
- Catalogue quality: filters, categories, attribute facets, image uploads, media CDN and document access
- Environment discipline: hosted vs local database migration state, and sample-data publishing validated separately
- Load model at scale: expensive catalogue searches, availability reads, upload spikes, bot scraping and provider quotas
